Srinagar, May 27 (KNO): The mental health experts in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday said that prevailing situation is very scary and the mental health is affected but for the maximum number of people it’s just a normal situation stating that lockdowns are nothing new for people living here. Experts believe that it's very important that the masses are bit scared of the situation as it helps to self-implement the necessary precautions. Talking exclusively to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), valleys renowned mental health expert, Dr. Arshid Hussain, said that current psychological health delivery should focus on people who already have an existing psychiatric illness, whose current distress is severe enough to warrant a diagnosis and the disasters are as old as humans. He said the number of suicides have not witnessed spike during the lockdown rather the incident reporting has mounted and every small incidents are being reported these days and prevailing situation is very scary. “Mental health is affected and that doesn’t mean they are all ill but it’s that people are scared and afraid of the situation, but for the maximum number of population this is normal situation and lockdown is nothing new.” He said it’s very important to be sacred of situation because it helps to follow the necessary precautions. “The life of foreigners and people living here is quite different as people manage things even if very little is available and the lockdown is nothing new for the people here.” Dr Arshid also said the maximum population in Kashmir is rural and most of them are busy in agricultural activities these days which also helps them to keep away from the mental health issues even if they are sacred of the situation. “To be fearful is normal so most of us are fearful and normal now and fear is universal this time. But we as culture have faced such life threatening situations innumerable times whether it was trauma of conflict, earthquake, floods or snowstorms.” He furthermore said that current psychological health delivery should focus on people who already have an existing psychiatric illness, whose current distress is severe enough to warrant a diagnosis—(KNO)
